BIO:

My first foray into songwriting was FAWM 2010. I got hooked. I play a lot of guitar (acoustic & electric) and harmonica. My songs usually come out as a cross between any of the following genres: blues, country, folk, rockabilly, and singer-songwriter.

I'm down for collabs, if you've got something I can help out with.

If you leave a comment, please be as honest as you can.

Soundboard

She turned me into a newt!

still battling cold -- can't sing. I will record the latest version when I can.

Somehow I caught a cold with the whole sore throat thing. Right now, my voice is sort of gravely -- which might be perfect for Carolina or Bust. I think I might do that recording tonight no matter what.

Hey alfalfa! This is really great! I love this melody… Your music and voice give these words the most appropriate colour I could ever think of! Frankly, at the beginning this set of lyrics did not count to my favourite, but it is your music that made it become one of them… I never thought it could turn out that nicely, thanks so much for that! It`s my Dad`s favourite song. After having read Chip`s comment I listened again to some songs of Parsons` and in deed, I did not think of it either, but there are certain similarities, which is also great… Once again, thank you so much for this, it is always a great pleasure to listen to your creations!

Hey alfalfa! Thanks a lot for your message! it is not only ok, I would feel honoured...

Hey alfalfa, I enjoyed our collabs a lot… some time ago I asked you if I could let you know about the existence of some sets of lyrics that might eventually suit the style of your songs. I guess now it is time to keep this promise:

-halloween http://fiftyninety.fawmers.org/songs/11005
-a man loving you http://fiftyninety.fawmers.org/songs/11171
-what is life? http://fiftyninety.fawmers.org/songs/10960
-a matter of time http://fiftyninety.fawmers.org/songs/10701
-christina http://fiftyninety.fawmers.org/songs/10745
-years http://fiftyninety.fawmers.org/songs/10308
-chandler road 242 http://fiftyninety.fawmers.org/songs/10117

If you have already read them, please, regard this note as irrelevant. And I think it is redundant to say this, however, I will: of course, these are just some suggestions, which means you are also welcome to pick up any other set of lyrics if you like or none, of course, if nothing strikes you… So once again, absolutely no obligation, of course, just some suggestions… Anyway, I`d look forward to hear from you…
kind regards,
Arthur

Hi alfalfa - as a fellow Arthur Rossi collaborator, you might want to check out my work with him: A Better Man Than Me: http://fiftyninety.fawmers.org/songs/9205

Hi, thought I would see if I could come up with something for "I saw my love the other day" - have you added more to it since you wrote to me about it?

Hi, I haven't forgotten! Have been really busy the last couple of weeks, my mom has been over visiting from the states so that's taken up all my time.

"Hey, Kevin. I'm liking what you've got going for "Carolina or Bust." I just had a thought about it... what if we structure it sort of like the song "Highwayman," written by Jimmy Webb. In other words, make each verse about a different person hitching to Carolina?"

Give it a shot -- I am (temporarily) on strike until you send back a 2nd verse -- ha, ha! You have some good ideas, as usual, give it a whirl and let's see where it goes next. Thanks for the opportunity to co-write with you!

"Take It Slow" is now posted, with a touch of banjo and harmony vocal. I think it came out pretty nice - it was fun working with you and I'd be happy to do it again!

I keep listening to the demo already for a while, doing nothing else, just enjoying… That´s fantastic, alfalfa! I`m in love with this melody… Especially the chorus is so catchy and great, performed with such a deep empathy that I guess there is nothing left to say except for: fantastic! Again you put magic to some simple words of mine… Thanks so much for that! I really enjoy in our collaborations a lot and whenever you find anything you like (and you think you could eventually use), please, feel free to do so… At the moment I am writing new songtexts and at the same time revising some older ones. Among those older ones that still wait to be revised, there are two or three candidates that I think they could eventually suit the music you do… If you like I`ll let you know, otherwise, of course, just drop by whenever you like...

I unlocked it so you could see/hear it. I'll re-lock it or delete it as need be.

I posted a first verse and chorus -- you should be able to view the locked song since you are listed as a collaborator.

Hey!! Again thanks so much for your kind comment!! I would be very, very happy if you gave it a go!

Hi Alfalfa, some good song ideas there, I'll see if I can come up with either working with your song or coming up with ideas of my own at some point this week.

I know the concept of bland, forumla type country songs -- I write a bunch of them (ha, ha). Maybe back to the hitchhiking theme and the guy who picks him up is james Dean. I just checked -- I thought he picked up a hitch-hiker, but it was Rolf Wütherich in his car, a porch mechanic! Let's think on it so more.

Hey!! Thanks a lot for your kind words!! I am always glad to read a comment of yours!!

I'll have more time for this one -- I got left out of the random collab thing for this week. Probably not a bad thing (ha, ha).

I am without internet for awhile for some reason. I am down at the local coffee shop. Take a 1st cut or put together a story board. I will look in this evening.

Hi Alfalfa, want to come back for more, eh? Heheh ... kind of busy over the next day or so, but will give it some thought on what we could do together - do you have any ideas in mind?

I actually did a little long distance hitchhiking -- but no one really hitchhikes too much any more (that I can tell). the theme might make a nice setup for a serial killer type thing (ha, ha).

Thinking about your theme, I sketched out a little tale where the big boys go into town to party, leave a younger boy behind. I quickly realized that I had started a story line which was going to take too many words to bring into life -- I am strongly in the camp of 3-4 minute songs. Here is what I wrote so far. Maybe with your ideas, we can get a story together (or go back to square one with your couple of ideas!). It's not too good, but maybe it will inspire something.

hey boys whatta ya say
let's go into town this friday night
drink a little drink
dance a little dance
don't have to be back 'till morning light

I was young but I asked big Tom
can't I come along and see
he says no way
this jobs for men
no way your mama let you leave

No, no you're too young
you stay here where you belong
sun's going down, run along home
you're not ready for the great unknown

"Would you like to try a collab of some kind with me?"
-------------------------------------------------------

Sure, I have been a little behind this 50/90 so I need some inspiration. What do you want to write about? I do have one of those random collabs being assigned to me (today?), but there is no reason I can't start on a 2nd one, too! Thanks for the offer.

Hi alfalfa, yes..."Moments" is up for musical grabs...feel free to experiment with it however you're hearing it!

No need to rush on the demo. Take your time. But I'm looking forward to hearing it!

Hi Alfalfa, the demo for A Good Day to Die (I collaborated with Wyatt on this one) is up if you want to have a listen :) http://fiftyninety.fawmers.org/songs/8115

I would love for you to do a demo on "Home is Love." Feel free!

Your welcome Alfalfa, I was a big fan of XTC when they first came out and still love a lot of their early albums like go2 but the album that has beating hearts "mummer" has a couple of other brilliant tunes like ladybird, great fire and my favourite tune of theirs Love on a farmboy's wages.

Thanks a lot for the kind comments!! I am happy you like it...

Loved your song "Awfully late in Amsterdam" very, very much, I guess I even wrote a comment there some time ago. Actually, I loved it so much that it became the "core" or "root" of inspiration for writing the lyrics "adelaide" myself, which I began some days ago, but finished today. Also left a short note in the liner notes about it...
Keep up the great work, always love to drop by and to listen to your songs!!

""""""""""". I'm thinking of making a new or modified melody for the verses... something with a little space in between the lines to make the chorus more of a change."""""
""""""""""""""Right on, on changing the verse melody--I knew the flow of the verses was too similar to the Chorus
(Bad habit of mine)
We're usually on pretty much the same page, so if it's ok with you, I'll go ahead and list you as collaborator?

Sent you 2 verses and a C for musing as I hear it. I didn't do but a couple takes so it's probably a mite rough.
But if you hear something else , send it to me.
Man, has the board slowed down the last couple days. Must be a lot of folks on vacation.
(And did you hear Barbara's version of Loaf Of Bread? Love it)

Sure 'nuff on Musing Alfalfa.
I will send something yet this evening.
If it doesn't grab you , send me something or modify what I hear
Probably in an hour or less--could be a bit rough

...totally gone. Blank. I'll come back later and try again. purposely not listening to the Nancy version!.

Hi, I just wanted to say sorry i haven't commented yet on your songs, i barely spend any time at home and your songs are hosted in a place that the firewall at work won't let me listen to! I will make the effort to listen to a few at some point though.

Thanks for the comments on Kristi's Right Now, I (Larry) did the music. Always appreciate kudos on my ever-evolving guitar playing.

If you're OK with it, I'll put you down as collab on Tree while we work out the res of it, OK?

Thank you so much! Again you made something wonderful out of some simple, written words. Beautiful melody, nice vocal, I love this interpretation of "when angels disappear". The great usage of the mouth organ adds the certain something to it, a very nice idea... You did a great job on this, my friend, thank you!

Hey, you are very deligent, my friend! Thank you for these great news and all this in such a short time...! Can`t wait to hear it!!! Thank you very much!

Wow!! That was quick!!

""The lyrics are great, though the last two lines of the second verse didn't quite seem in rhythm to me.""
Well, those are the two I had trouble with Alphy :) I'll look at them again
Thanks

Thanks for the comment on Loaf of bread Alphy.
All the interest surprised me.

Thanks for your comments and thoughts on my lyrics. Great to have input like that. I agree about “moment” sounding better than the plural in “Moments.” It makes it more special too or something. Remembering how a word sounds is so important, yeah…since people will be hearing it and not reading it! I will be commenting on your stuff too.

Thanks for the comment on "The Ghost of Woody Guthrie". Very perceptive picking out the "goody or baddy" line, the stories that future generations tell about us are yet to be decided, and will have to do with the choices we make today. Being a grandfather now, what we are leaving as a legacy preys on my mind a good deal these days. Glad you enjoyed it anyway, I'm pretty pleased myself!

Hey! These are great news, my friend! I know I told you, but once again, I LOVE the result of our first collaboration (thanks so much for that!) and so do the persons that surround me to that I have shown it... Concerning "When angels disappear", of course, I`d love it if you gave it a go, too... it is truely a big honour for me...

Hi, check out http://paulmilne.wordpress.com/2011/07/11/old-words-new-music/

Sorry, I don't know your real name, so couldn't name-check you properly!

Paul

Alf, I've added some comments to the liner notes. Do you mind if I link to the song from my blog?

The honour is absolutely mine... thank you once again for the fabulous song! I LOVE IT! By the way, first the download did not work, but now it does... thanks!!!

I've just sent you an email. ;)

Alf... I am speechless... Thank you so much... I have never believed someone could make something as wonderful as you did of some simple words! Love the music with the guitar and the way you performed it, it suits the melancholy of these lyrics perfectly! Have been listening to it for an hour now... Could you do me a favour? Could you, please, eventually consider to make it downloadable, I`d love to keep it "for eternity" on my pc...
